Unit 1: Musical Expression

What makes a memorable music performance?

This is one of the key questions we must ask ourselves as musicians. What is the point of music without true emotion and feeling behind the notes?

What makes this performance so special?

Band: Dire Straits

Song: Tunnel of Love Live at Wembley Arena 1985

The entire band captures the feeling of the song through their movements and expressions. Due to the dynamic changes in this song, there are a lot of mood changes which are reflected in all the band members' expressions.

You can also see the exaggeration of certain elements in Mark Knopfler's playing, where he acts as if he's doing something really hard when it's actually really easy.

All of the band members look happy during the upbeat section of the song, which, in turn, makes the audience feel the same way. They do so by dancing and interacting with each other on stage.

In addition, the lighting during the concert is incredible. How the lights dim and shine on Mark during the final breakdown empowers the emotional, spiritual and personal connection that the audience has with the band - despite not actually knowing them.

Mark has such an iconic image. His use of the Stratocaster to his iconic sweatbands all paint a vivid image of what the band stands for. It's very low-key, yet notable.

The simple layout of the crowd encourages the crowd to pay attention to the music.

Finally, the cues given to the crowd to clap from the bassist during the slower sections of the song increases the crowd engagement.
