Unit 1: Rehearsal Reflection

DO IT.

Last rehearsal, we (me, Joey, Levi and Camryn) practiced Hotel California.

What?

Hotel California was chosen by Levi as she had previously learned it. I had learned parts of the solo previously too, so it was deemed an apt proposal.
I was unfortunately late to the rehearsal due to personal circumstances which were uncontrollable.
We managed to practice the song multiple times and I auditioned for the first time standing up.
As a result, I experienced a few minor errors with the solo part as I was adjusting to the new position.
The whole band did quite well as we managed to run through the song multiple times with hardly any mistakes.
Switching in the last verse from rhythm to lead guitar was quite the challenge as had to take off the capo, change the channel on the amp, mute the guitar and change to the bridge pickup.

So What?

If we continue on this trajectory, I think we can perform the piece with minimal mistakes at the performance. I think this was mainly because of how well we communicated as a band.
I had a lot of working out to do with the guitar parts since the actual song has about 7 guitars and we only have one.
I decided to use a guitar pedal to help me switch from the rhythm part to the lead part as quickly as possible. However, this guitar pedal caused too much of a level change when used for fills within the solo.

Now What?

During the performance, I will be using my own equipment as the equipment supplied by the college was not fit for the arrangement.
I will also change the fills to simple chord extensions and strumming changes to not overpower the other instruments in the song.

Next time, we could try to experiment with something new that challenges ourselves and pushes us out of our comfort zones.
We can also work on our stage craft and interaction with the crowd when we put together a full setlist.
