Progress Report
Following the trend of last week, there was a lot of inactivity as people failed to show up for rehearsals. Again, it was typically just me and Sol in the rehearsal room and sometimes Joey. With the recent loss of our singer, Camryn, my hope is dwindling for the band.
I'm sure you can imagine it's hard being one of the only members of the band who consistently puts in the effort and shows up for every rehearsal. This week, I spoke to Lee Davies about my concerns with the lack of dedication and tendency towards conflict that some people on the course express.
I am hoping for change to happen next week, otherwise, I have little faith in the completion of our assignment, and in greater contemplation, our band's future as a whole.
Individual Learning Plan
This week, inspired by a recent concert I'd attended, I decided to learn one of Philip Sayce's songs. He opened the show with this incredible song which immediately caught my attention - as soon as I heard it, I made the decision: I have to learn this.
'Out of My Mind' not only improved my economy and hybrid picking ability (see the fast lick in the second verse) but also cemented my muting techniques. By far, the toughest obstacle was that fast lick I described - not only in the sense of learning to play it, but also researching and figuring it out note-by-note. It took a lot of pre-planning and dedication to get that lick right.
As you can see, it still isn't perfect (although I probably could get it perfect with a few more takes), however I think the natural accuracy will build over time with more correct repetitions. I also found when playing this part that relaxation is key, since tensing up only slows you down when playing such challenging passages.
Next week, I will learn to hopefully play the next part of the song which includes fast octave strumming. This is a very popular technique used in the blues by people like Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Mayer and of course Jimi Hendrix; that being said, they typically only apply this technique to double stops.
> For full transparency, this post was completed and the video was uploaded on the 15th of December. The video is a previous recording from approximately 2 weeks ago - however, this post has been written to reflect my feelings at the time.
I apologise for not having written this earlier, however, please understand I have been experiencing mental health struggles which take priority in my life.
Please accept this post for the initiative I have taken in completing my undone work.
